Cape Dunstans delivered a technically challenging HDD project for the University of Queensland’s Heron Island Research Station within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Working under strict environmental oversight, the project involved drilling beneath a highly sensitive coral reef and connecting two new seawater intakes. The completed system exceeded the University’s requirements, improving the research station’s capabilities while delivering time and cost savings.
Project delivery included:
Benthic and geotechnical investigations to identify suitable subsea exit points and develop a drilling methodology that protected the surrounding coral reef.
Directional drilling beneath a sensitive platform coral reef in accordance with stringent environmental and regulatory requirements.
Design, fabrication and installation of two seawater intakes, including connection to the pipeline and secure anchoring to the seabed.
