Horizontal dewatering wells for large-scale open-pit mining operations.
Cape Dunstans delivered Australia’s first horizontal dewatering wells constructed for a major open-pit mine at Fortescue’s Solomon Hub in the Pilbara.
The innovative system eliminated the need for conventional in-pit vertical dewatering infrastructure. This reduced activity within the operating pit, improved safety and enabled more efficient water recovery through the strategic placement of the wells.
Project delivery included:
Two horizontal dewatering wells successfully drilled to measured depths of 938 metres and 1,200 metres.
Installation of oilfield-style electric submersible pumps capable of achieving a sustained combined output of 250 litres per second.
An innovative horizontal well design that reduced in-pit infrastructure and improved the safety and efficiency of the mine’s dewatering operations.
